To have a laser hair removal treatment, preparation is key to achieving optimal results from each treatment. At Body Basix Cardiff Laser Clinic, we pride ourselves on creating individual treatment plans so every client gets the most out of their laser hair removal course.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your laser hair removal treatment with us.
1. Avoid Sun Exposure for at least 4 weeks before laser hair removal
Avoiding sun exposure is one of the most important things to do before you laser treatment. Sun exposure significantly increases the risk of burns and makes the treatment much less effective. Scheduling your laser appointments around any holidays where you will be exposed to UV rays is essential and we recommend to always apply a high factor suncream when exposure is unavoidable.
2. Avoid Fake Tan for at least 2 weeks before laser hair removal
The laser is attracted to the pigment (melanin) in the hair, when fake tan is applied, it adds pigment to the surface of the skin which can absorb the laser instead. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the laser in the hair but also highly increases the risk of burns. We recommend any fake tan residue is completely scrubbed off at least 2 weeks prior to your laser hair removal treatment.
3. Stop Waxing and Plucking for at least 6 weeks before laser hair removal
To achieve results with laser hair removal, the hair follicle must still be present. Laser targets the hair follicle, therefore laser hair removal will not be effective when the hair is removed. You must avoid waxing or plucking the hair in the treatment area for at least 6 week prior to your laser appointment at our Cardiff clinic. You can still shave the area in between your sessions as this method leaves the hair follicle present for your treatment.
4. Shave the treatment area 24 hours before laser hair removal
Shaving the treatment area before your laser hair removal session is essential. We need the hair to be present but at skin level for your treatment to ensure the laser is able to reach the hair follicle. We recommend shaving 24 hours prior to your laser session as this will give your skin time to settle before your appointment.
5. Avoid All Skincare Products on the Treatment Day
Do not apply any skin care products to the treatment area on the day of your appointment. This includes any moisturisers, deodorants and perfumes as applying these products on the skin can increase the risk of adverse reactions during your laser session. You should arrive at your appointment with clean, dry skin for optimal results.
6. Wear loose fitting Clothing to your appointment
It is very normal for your skin to feel slightly sensitive after your laser treatment. We recommend wearing loose fitting clothing as any friction on the area can cause irritation.
8. Avoid Ibroprofen, Anti-histamines & Aspirin
These medications can make your skin more sensitive and cause adverse reactions. You need to avoid using these medications for at least 48 hours prior to your laser treatment.
9. Alway Be Honest with Your Technician
It is crucial to be truthful with your laser technician. If you have had recent sun exposure, used any skincare products or have experienced any medical changes, you must let you technician know. At Body Basix Cardiff, we always put your safety as a top priority and transparency will allow us to provide a safe and effective treatment.
10. Schedule Your Treatments Strategically
You will need multiple sessions of laser hair removal to achieve optimal results. Usually, clients will need 8-10 sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart to ensure all of the hair is targeted in the right phase of growth.
